Director of Music Ministries

POSITION LOCATION:   Milton, Ontario

REMUNERATION AND POSITION TYPE:

Part time – 8 hours/week on average, contract.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Director of Music Ministries will be responsible for organizing, planning and implementing music for each worship service with special attention to the balance of contemporary music and traditional hymns and special seasons of the church year such as Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • As a member of the Worship Committee (Minister, Christian Education and Youth Coordinator, Accompanist and other delegates), select music appropriate to worship themes, seasons of the Church year and the capabilities of choir members.
  • Meet regularly with the Pastor to confirm growth of the worship structure.
  • Identify and encourage cross-generational participation in Knox’s music ministry, i.e. occasional trios, quartets, women’s, men’s, children’s vocal groups in worship and special celebrations.
  • Conduct regular weekly choir rehearsals September to June and when unable to lead them, arrange for an appropriate substitute choir leader.
  • Conduct the choir’s anthems during weekly worship services and special celebrations such as Christmas Eve, Good Friday.
  • Assist, if needed, in the Children’s Christmas pageant planned by Christian Education and Youth Coordinator.
  • Encourage and teach Knox’s congregation new hymns/songs during worship.
  • In consultation with the Pianist/Accompanist, arranges for musical presentations during some worship services from September to June. This may include guest soloists or instrumentalists.
  • Liaise with Knox’s Sound Team to ensure the sound system is working properly.
  • If requested, provide special music for weddings or funerals or recommend a suitable musician. This duty is outside of regular duties and the family would pay a fee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

The candidate will ideally have:

  • Demonstrated proficiency and competency in directing choirs.
  • Proven success in developing choirs and music programs in a church setting.
  • University degree in music, choir performance or equivalent experience.
  • At least three years successfully directing a choir.
  • Direct knowledge of worship songs and basic understanding of scripture and its authority within the Presbyterian Church.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid organizational and problem-solving capabilities
  • Able to adapt to a flexible work schedule and willingness to travel

Work Format

  • Work is generally performed at Knox Presbyterian Church, 170 Main St. E., Milton, Ontario.
  • Working hours are generally:
    • Thursday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. (Sept to June) for Choir Practice
    • 9:30 am to 12:00 noon for Sunday Worship Service plus Worship Services on Good Friday and Christmas Eve
    • Five consecutive half-days for Vacation Bible School in the summer.
  • The nature of the position will occasionally require mutually agreed upon evening and weekend work.
